The Uncharted Movie which was expected to release in theatres July 16th, 2021 has been pushed back to February 11th 2022.
According to an article by the Hollywood Reporter, the video game adaptation along with several other high profile Sony film releases were being pushed back from their planned release dates.
These included Ghostbusters: Afterlife which is moving from June 11 to Nov. 11; Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway which is being pushed from April 2 to June 11; Kay Cannon’s musical retelling of fairytale classic Cinderella, which had been set to open Feb. 5, will now go out July 16 and superhero film Morbius scheduled for an October release is now coming out on January 21 2022.
These scheduling changes sadly had to be made due to the still ongoing global pandemic. Recent theatrical releases have failed to result in the appropriate returns for the millions of dollars required for their budgets therefore the delays are expected to continue.
The Uncharted movie is no stranger to challenges though. It has gone through several director changes, rewrites and delays. It is undoubtedly a far different product than what was initially planned for back in 2009. Even during filming in 2020, there were problems despite the precautions taken when Antonio Banderas tested positive for Covid-19.
Despite all this production managed to rap up and leading man Tom Holland shared some faithful set photos of him as Nathan Drake.

Only time will tell if this will be the last pushback for the release date. However, according to Sony Interactive president Jim Ryan, the Uncharted movie is “just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences.” We may have a whole host of films based on Playstation franchises to see in the future.
