Warhammer Vermintide 2: How to Get Red Items

In Warhammer Vermintide 2, how to get red items is the ultimate end game. It’s the best quality gear, so it’s only natural that you’d want to have it. Given how powerful red items are, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that it’s pretty hard to get your hands on them. Not only do they only drop from certain difficulties, but their drop chance is incredibly low, too.

All the same, you’re going to end up having to grind for red items in Warhammer Vermintide 2 at some point, so you might as well know how to do it properly. We’re going to break down how to get red items, what influences their drop chance, and what difficulty to play on to effectively farm them.

To get red items in Vermintide 2, you have to open any Vault, or a General/Emperor Chest. All of those loot boxes have a chance at dropping a red. This drop chance increases with the quality of the chest, both based on difficulty and how many points you get in whatever mission you’re playing.

That being said, you’ll have a pretty bad time if you’re trying to get red items out of a General’s Chest. Red item drop chance varies dramatically, to the point where there’s only one real good way to farm them.

How Points Work in Warhammer Vermintide 2

To give yourself the best chance at getting a red item in Warhammer Vermintide 2, you need to max out the tier of your chests, as well as ensure you’re playing on the difficulty that gives you the best quality of chest. For you to do that, you need to know how both of them work.

The tier of your chest is influenced by how many points you get in the mission you’re playing. This tier directly correlates to the drop chance of red items.

There are six different tiers that you need to keep in mind:

  • Peasant.
  • Commoner.
  • Merchant.
  • Soldier
  • General.
  • Emperor.

The higher the tier, the higher the drop chance for red items, with that drop chance being influenced by the tier of the loot box that you’re opening.

What do we mean by tier of loot box? Well, the reward you get at the end of each mission actually differs depending on the difficulty you play. Recruit, Veteran, and Legend/Cataclysm all give you a different type of loot box:

  • Recruit – Strongbox.
  • Veteran – Coffer.
  • Champion – Chest.
  • Legend/Cataclysm – Vault.

Just like the tiers, the quality of your loot box influences the chances that you’ll get a red item. Now, specific numbers are iffy at best when it comes to red item drop chance, but it’s more or less a given that Strongboxes and Coffers can’t drop them. So, you won’t be able to play on Recruit or Veteran – not that you would want to, anyway.

Emperor’s Chests have a roughly 8% chance of dropping a red item each time you open one. Emperor’s Vaults, on the other hand, clock in at around a 20% chance. That’s the highest drop rate in the game, too.

So, if you want to get red items in Warhammer Vermintide 2, you need to open any loot box that’s a General’s Chest, or better.

As we’ve already discussed, you need to open a General’s Chest or better quality loot box to be in with a chance of a red item – with Emperor’s Vaults being the best. So, the best way to farm them is to get as many Emperor Vaults as quickly as possible.

Whatever mission you can complete quickly on Legend difficulty will do the trick here, but The Screaming Bell is particularly great for this kind of farm. You can get a run of the mission done in around eight or nine minutes, including all the books.

If you have a mission you prefer over this – feel free to use it. The Screaming Bell is just the widely accepted go-to when you need to finish runs quickly.
