What is Vitality in Elden Ring

Updated:
Even ordinary NPCs can be deadly in Elden Ring if you don't have High Vitality.

There are a ton of attributes you need to keep in mind while playing Elden Ring, but today we’re going to focus on one in particular – Vitality. This little guy is what’s going to keep you from biting the dust in this game.

Vitality is all about how good you are at dodging death. In Elden Ring, you’re going to need to be a pro at that if you want to make it through in one piece. So, how do you boost your Vitality and keep it up?

What is Vitality in Elden Ring

Vitality is the measure of your resistance to death, so the higher your Vitality, the harder it is for you to die. You can boost your Vitality like you would with Vigor, Mind, and Endurance.

There are various ways to do this: Using the Pillar of Defense, Cyst of the Prince of Death, or The Boil on the Prince of Death. We’ll dive into the details of these shortly.

Wormfaces in Elden Ring can be very annoying.
With High Vitality, you can easily defeat Wormfaces in Elden Ring.

Is Vitality Important in Elden Ring

Yes – Vitality directly affects your ability to defend yourself against attacks, making it crucial to your survival. While dealing more damage may seem like the flashier option, surviving in Elden Ring is everything. And that’s where Vitality comes in.

However, you need to be aware of the different status effects that can decrease your Vitality. For example, Poison or Death Blight effects will cause a bar to fill up at the bottom of your screen. When this bar reaches its limit, you’ll feel the full effects of the triggered status.

And trust me, you don’t want to be hit with the Death Blight. No matter how much health you have left, this powerful effect will take you down instantly. So keep your Vitality high and stay alert to avoid the deadly status effects of the game.

Does Focus Affect Vitality in Elden Ring

Focus works like Vitality, providing players with more defensive attributes against status effects. Specifically, it helps increase your defense against mental illness like madness or sleep. Which they can be just as deadly as physical damage.

But with higher levels of both Vitality and Focus, you’ll have more time to escape from effects like sleep or death mist. This will allow you to focus on combat and timing your dodge rolls.

Arcane is one of the main eight attributes in Elden Ring.
You can have high Vitality when you invest on Arcane.

How to Increase Vitality in Elden Ring

You can add points to Arcane to boost your Vitality directly. It’s the main stats that determines your defensive strength as you level up.

Wearing good armor sets can be a better choice from time to time, especially for high Vitality. Because as in all Souls-like games, side improvements decrease as you level up an ability:

Arcane LevelVitality Points (per level)
1 – 15+1
16 – 40+0.6
41 – 60+0.5
61 – 99+0.25
The higher your Arcane level, the higher your Vitality.

The same is true for Focus. Mind is the main attribute you need to invest in to have high Focus:

Mind LevelFocus Points (per level)
31 – 40+3
41 – 60+0.5
61 – 99+0.25
The higher your Mind level, the higher your Focus.

Best Armor Sets for High Vitality

While it’s different for everyone’s playstyle, investing in Arcane to get high Vitality is not practical. When you want to Vitality-build, the most investment should be in Arcane, but don’t forget some armor sets.

You can invest in Vigor and Mind thanks to armors that give extra Vitality points and thus increase your defense. Here are the some awesome armor sets for higher Vitality and Focus:

  • Deathbed Set: 263 Vitality – 63 Focus
  • Lusat’s Set: 209 Vitality – 181 Focus
  • Goldmask’s Set: 169 Vitality – 169 Focus
  • Mushroom Set: 181 Vitality – 214 Focus
  • Fire Prelate Set: 120 Vitality – 215 Focus
  • Fia’s Set: 153 Vitality – 105 Focus
