Don’t Starve Together: How To Change Character

How to change character in Don't Starve Together

Long gone are the days when only Wilson was the playable character. Since there are so many characters that are really good at surviving in certain conditions, the developers introduced a way for the players to swap characters without having to start over. Here’s our guide on how to change characters in Don’t Starve Together.

How to Change Characters in Don’t Starve Together?

To swap between characters, you’re going to need to do a little searching in your world. The first thing you need to find is a Rockyland Biome. In the rockyland biomes, at random points in your save meteors will fall leaving behind a Moonrock Boulder.

Please keep in mind that it is highly unlikely that the meteors will fall in the first days of your world, so you may need to wait a while before you can find the boulder.

Once you find a Moonrock Boulder, mine it and collect the Celestial Ball inside it. This celestial ball is going to be half of the recipe for the Moon Rock Idol, an item we need to change characters. The other part of the recipe is a purple gem.

Once you have crafted the Moonrock Idol, you will need a board and a rope to craft the Portal Paraphernalia. Once you have both items, go to the Florid Postern (the spawn portal) and drop the paraphernalia in the portal. After that, it will request you to put inside a few items.

Just put in all the items that the portal requests and you will be able to swap characters at any time you want, how many times you want without repercussions. You keep all of your items and blueprints when you swap characters, so you don’t have to worry about them.

All Characters in Don’t Starve Together

There are a lot of characters to choose from in Don’t Starve Together. Some may be better than others in different situations. The swap mechanic allows the players to swap at will between all the base characters from the game.

As such, it is important to know who to pick in what situation. Here is a list of all the Don’t Starve Together characters and their strengths and weaknesses:

  • Wilson – Grows Beard
  • Willow – Immune to fire, spawns fire when low sanity
  • Wolfgang – Increased attack when full hunger, afraid of the dark
  • Wendy – Haunted by twin sister, not afraid in the dark
  • WX-78 – Can eat anything, overcharged by lightning, damaged by rain
  • Wickerbottom – Can craft powerful effect books, cannot sleep, refills less hunger when eating stale and spoiled food
  • Woodie – Permanent beard that keeps warm in winter but gets hot in the summer, can transform into a monster, full moon transforms him into a monster randomly
  • Wes – Can craft balloons, lowest stats of all characters, mute so no audible warnings from Hounds, etc.
  • Wigfrid – Can craft powerful weapons and armor, only eats meat
  • Webber – Is a monster, can befriend spiders, grows silk, can not befriend Pigs, Bunnymen, etc.
  • Winona – Consumes hunger to craft faster, can craft gadgets like catapults, crafts slower if hunger is lower than 50
  • Warly – Can craft very useful specific foods, can not eat non-crockpot foods, faster hunger drain
  • Walter – Has an unkillable pet dog with an inventory, gains sanity if 5+ trees are around him, takes more damage from bee
  • Maxwell – Automatically regenerates sanity, has low base HP, can craft minions

There are many specific situations in which swapping characters mid-game can save your world. For example, in particularly harsh winter and you really need to keep yourself warm. Woodie may be a better choice than someone like Wickerbottom.

Since you can swap at will and without any consequence, it would be a bit silly not to take advantage of the mechanic.
