How to Farm and Grow Crops in Don't Starve Together

Farming is an essential mechanic that players must use in Don’t Starve Together in order to make life easier in the later stages of the game. Farming is unmatched in terms of consistency in the latter days of the save and can singlehandedly carry you through the late game. So here’s how to farm in Don’t Starve Together.

How to Set up a Farm in Don’t Starve Together

Farming in Don’t Starve Together is one of the most underused mechanics of the game. Many players ignore farming because it requires a little more effort than it did before. But farming can eliminate the need for ANY other food source come late game. Especially if you invest some time into it.

Farming is simple on the surface, but it has a lot more depth than it may seem at first glance. Long gone are the days of planting seeds in random places and leaving them for a few days to grow plants. Now, you have to take care of your garden.

But, before you take care of the garden, you must create one. The first thing you need in order to set up a farm in Don’t Starve Together is the Garden Rigamajig. Craft one (or more) from the science machine, and place them on the ground. They will transform a pitchfork size area into farmable land.

Once you have as much farmable land as you need, you’re going to have to clean it up. Then, craft a hoe, make some holes and start planting your seeds.

How to Grow Plants in Don’t Starve Together

Growing plants in Don’t Starve is not as simple as just planting the seed and leaving them on their own to grow. There are a few things you need to take care of to ensure they grow properly.

You can always control what you grow and how, so when the late game comes, you have the supplies you need so that your hunger, sanity, and HP are an afterthought. You can even revive using some special concoctions.

Here are the best gardening tips for Don’t Starve Together:

  • Gardeneer Hat – The Gardeneer Hat opens up a new world for farming. Ever since the “Reap what you sow” update, the hat allows you to research every single crop you can grow in the game. Simply click on it while equipped, and a new menu will pop up. In the gardener menu, you will be able to see things like the favorite season of growth for each plant, the amount of water for satisfying growth, and many other things. All it takes to craft the hat is one “bucket-o-poop”, three seeds, and an “electrical doodad”.
  • Fertilizers – Plants grow much faster and bigger if you use fertilizers. There are many fertilizers in the game, and you can get a lot of them, some easier than others. Some examples include Manure, Guano, Rot, Spoiled Fish, and Rotten Eggs. These are the easiest fertilizers to get. If you use the Gardeneer Hat to see which type of fertilizer your plant needs, you will have no problem growing the plant.
  • Tending to your plants – Plants in Don’t Starve Together work on a happiness level. Even if you’re trying to grow a plant in the wrong season, it can still grow if you tend to it and make it happy. You can easily tend to multiple plants at the same time by playing any instrument near them. This will keep them all happy and ensure they grow fast.
  • Watering Can – Now that your plants are happy, you also need to make sure they are healthy. Just like in real life, plants in Don’t Starve need water. The watering can is simply a must when trying to farm. It’s very easy to craft, requiring only two planks and two ropes. It can be filled from any source of water and it’s very easy to use.

As a final tip, be mindful of weeds. When you plant a seed there is a chance to grow into a weed instead of a plant. If you let weeds grow too much, they will multiply and take up a lot of space inside your garden and make your other plants grow much slower.
