Stardew Valley: How and Where To Get Hardwood

Stardew Valley Hardwood Stomp

Hardwood is slightly different from regular wood in Stardew Valley. It’s not that easy to find but is used in many crafting recipes like Oil Maker, Rain Totem, and Ostrich Incubator. There’s a limited amount of Hardwood that you can get per day so here are some tips on how and where to get Hardwood.

All Ways to Get Hardwood in Stardew Valley

To get hardwood in Stardew Valley, you have to find the old logs and tree stumps there are slightly reddish or mahogany trees. To break old logs you need a steel axe or better while for tree stumps you need a copper axe or better. Finally, mahogany trees can be cut with any axe.

There are numerous ways to get Hardwood in Stardew Valley, but here are the best of them:

  • Farm Hardwood in Secret Woods
  • Clear logs and stumps on your farm
  • Open chests and barrels inside the mine
  • Buy Hardwood from the traveling merchant
  • Play on a foraging map. It has 8 stumps that drop Hardwood and respawn daily
  • Increase the Woodskip Fish Pond population to 6
  • When you reach level 10 foraging, you can choose the lumberjack profession. With it, all trees have a chance of dropping hardwood

Now all of them will give you a decent amount of Hardwood but only a few of these methods are farmable. If you are playing on a classic map, your best bet would be heading to the Secret Woods every day and getting Hardwood there.

Where to Find Hardwood in Secret Woods

The secret woods is a hidden area southwest of your farm. To arrive there, you use the south exit of your farm, just below the lake, and then turn west immediately. Go through the border of the map passing by the traveling merchant and a very big tree that it’s beautiful during spring.

Stardew Valley Secret Woods Path

In the top corner of the map, just behind the wizard house, there is a small path between a fence and a hill.

The path is blocked by an old log. Break it with a steel axe or superior, go past it, and you will find yourself in a new area with a mystic feeling. It contains hardwood stumps and some green slimes, so remember to bring your sword.

You can break the stumps and you will get at least 10 pieces of hardwood. The area replenishes daily, so you can come back every day to get 10 more pieces. That by far is the best way to get hardwood in Stardew Valley.

Sometimes the stumps drop a mahogany seed, you can use it to plant a mahogany tree on your farm. It takes a long time to grow since unfertilized seeds have a 15% chance of growing to the next stage. But, with the tree fertilizer, that change goes to 60%. A full-grown mahogany tree drops 10 pieces of hardwood.
