Day and Night Cycle in 7 Days to Die

Before you start a new game, you can decide for yourself how you want time to work in the game. These options range from the duration of a day in the game to the relation to real-time.

A day in 7 Days to Die can last 12, 14, 16, or 18 in-game hours, depending on your choice. The sun spawns at 04:00, 06:00, 08:00, or 10:00, depending on which one you choose. However, it always sets at 22:00 and the night begins.

You can also specify how long a game day actually lasts. Here you’re spoilt for choice: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. In fact, you can end a day in the game when 10 minutes have passed in real life, or you can extend that time up to 120 minutes.

So what impact does this have on the gameplay and the player? The first thing you need to know is that day or night hasn’t something to do with the experience points you get or the type of loot you get.

What to do at Night in 7 Days to Die

Don’t leave your safe base at night unless you have to. This is because all the zombies that can’t run during the day invariably start running at night and move very fast. If you do want to loot safes at night, be prepared. Be sure to take a flashlight or torch with you, as your vision is severely limited at night while zombies’ isn’t.

And this brings us to the worst-case scenario. If you have to fight a zombie at night, you have to put away your flashlight or torch and pick up your gun. This means that you have to fight in the dark. But if you use a firearm with a flashlight, you will attract many more zombies.

Now that we’re convincing enough to not go out at night (it is exciting and fun for sure), here’s what else to do at night in 7 Days to Die:

  • Digging: Build a cellar where you can store your valuables. This way you can protect yourself from zombies. Also, you can collect Clay.
  • Mining: You will need the stone, especially at the beginning of the game. You can collect it quickly at night.
  • Upgrading: Upgrade the walls of your base if you have enough materials.
  • Building: Although it doesn’t take very long to build in 7 Days to Die, it still makes a lot of sense to do it at night.
  • Sorting: Organizing your materials will be very beneficial for you in the long run.
  • Repairing: Show your equipment that needs repair the care they deserve. You will need it during the day.

And of course, hunt! If you don’t have to do any of the above, you can hunt all the zombies you see without going far from the base. And there are quite a few materials you can try gathering (or at least plan to gather) when you have nothing to do:
