The Sims 4 Rags To Riches tips and tricks

Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? Rags to Riches is one of the oldest and most fun challenges to do in The Sims 4. As the years went on, the challenge evolved and is now an entirely customizable endeavor. If you’ve run out of things to do or are looking for something fun, here are all the rules and a few tips on Rags To Riches.

What is Rags to Riches in The Sims 4?

Rags to Riches is an unofficial challenge way to play The Sims 4. Similar to nuzelocke runs from the Pokemon franchise, Rags to Riches was created by players to make the game more fun. Since The Sims is a pretty laid-back and relaxing game, this adds another layer of depth to what you can do in the famous life simulator.

The Rags To Riches challenge (R2R) aims to make your sim go from nothing to rich. But, that’s not the only thing you have to do. There is a set of objectives that you set out for yourself when you start the challenge. They can include starting a family, building a home, or mastering a career.

Each of these goals goes into the “Mandatory Rules” of the challenge. Fulfill these goals in order to complete the challenge. If you’re trying the challenge for the first time, we recommend setting milder rules and goals. You will need some time in order to get used to the R2R way of playing the game.

What are the rules of the Rags to Riches Challenge in The Sims 4?

Rags to Riches is pretty customizable. That being said, there are a few set rules to follow for the challenge to be “official”.

Here is a set of basic rules that most Rags to Riches challenges should include:

  • Move your sim to the most expensive lot in town and get rid of the money (via the “money 0” cheat code)
  • Get rid of all possessions of your sim
  • Your spouse is NOT allowed to earn money without completing the mandatory rules first
  • You can only place things in your house AFTER you’ve completed the mandatory rules
  • If you don’t own a bed, sleep in other sim’s places or parks
  • You are allowed to make food in other sim’s places or parks but are NOT allowed to take the food home with you
  • Earn no money through hobbies

Then, there are the mandatory rules. The mandatory rules are set in stone to make it more clear when you complete certain parts of the challenge. Let’s look at some of them.

Career Mandatory Rules:

  • Pay 1000 for a college degree
  • Reach level 10 in the chosen career

Tips and Tricks for Rags to Riches in The Sims 4

If this is your first time trying the Rags to Riches challenge, we have a few tips and tricks to make your life easier. R2R is quite a complex challenge with lots of things to do and achieve. Especially at the start, it’s going to be very hard for you, whether you’re a hardened veteran or a newcomer.

Turn off Sim Autonomy – When you start a new save, your sim’s autonomy is automatically set to on. This means they will sometimes go and do things on their own. This is something that can be very dangerous as they can go and spend your money. In the early game, if your sim does that it can be a challenge killer.

Use community spaces – Community spaces are some of the best places to use at the beginning of your R2R run. Parks are great because they have places to sleep, toilets, or even spaces to cook. Although you can’t build your house in the back of the park, they’re great places to use for your basic needs.

Fishing and looking for frogs – Some of the best activities to get some money at the beginning of your challenge are fishing or looking for frogs. Although it will take a while until your sim learns to fish properly, you can still earn a good chunk to buy some of the basic stuff you need in the beginning. Looking for frogs is easier, but sometimes they take a long time to spawn. They can earn you anything from 20 to 100 simoleons.

Start working on your career early – Finally, getting your career maxed out is one of the hardest parts of the challenge. Once you get a little settled in, start working on your career. Most careers will NOT earn you a lot of money in the beginning, but as you go on, the money will add up, giving you a safety net in case something goes wrong. Writing, painting, or singing can be good places to start.
